Which Knife Steels Actually Sell Out? What 54,000 Drops Reveal
Every steel comparison article tells you about edge retention and toughness. None of them tell you the thing a buyer in the limited-release market actually needs to know: which steels sell out before you've finished deciding. We track every knife drop in real time — 54,488 of them, 99% with extracted specs — so we can answer it with data instead of forum consensus.
The sell-through table
Share of limited-release drops that reached sold-out, by blade steel (minimum 150 knives per steel; full methodology in our State of the Knife Drop Market report):
| Steel | Drops tracked | Median price | Sell-through |
|---|---|---|---|
| S45VN | 1,649 | $555 | 78.5% |
| 20CV | 917 | $450 | 71.6% |
| MagnaCut | 3,438 | $369 | 62.0% |
| CPM-S35VN | 976 | $177 | 55.3% |
| S90V | 760 | $300 | 52.0% |
| CPM-20CV | 1,055 | $259 | 49.8% |
| M390 | 4,416 | $289 | 45.8% |
| 154CM | 1,217 | $100 | 44.9% |
| Damascus | 1,478 | $180 | 41.7% |
| S35VN | 1,591 | $190 | 40.5% |
| D2 | 3,357 | $58 | 32.1% |
| 14C28N | 4,417 | $64 | 30.9% |
What the table actually says
1. Steel hype is measurable, and S45VN is winning it. At a $555 median price, S45VN drops still clear at 78.5% — the highest velocity of any steel with real volume. Crucible's successor to S35VN took a few years to win mindshare; per our data, it has.
2. MagnaCut is the new default premium. 3,438 drops makes it the third-most-produced steel in our universe — remarkable for a steel introduced in 2021 — and it still sells through at 62%. The supply surge hasn't dented demand yet.
3. M390 is saturated. The most-produced premium steel (add M390MK and the family tops 7,400 drops) now sells through below 46%. It's still excellent steel — but as a scarcity play, its moment has passed. If you want an M390 knife, you can afford to wait for the price drop.
4. Budget steels don't sell out — and that's your leverage. D2 and 14C28N drops clear at ~31%. Two-thirds stay in stock, which means discounts follow. Check our deals page — it's disproportionately budget-steel listings marked down.
5. The anomaly worth knowing: CPM-S35VN at $177 outsells regular S35VN at $190. Same steel family, near-same price, 15-point velocity gap — the "CPM" prefix carries real signaling power with collectors.
How to use this as a buyer
- See a knife in S45VN, 20CV, or MagnaCut you want? Decide fast. These steels' sell-through rates mean the default outcome is gone.
- Want M390, S35VN, or anything budget? Patience pays. Sub-50% sell-through means stock lingers and prices soften.
- Set a follow. Any brand page on Drop Beacon lets you follow for drop alerts — the practical answer to high-velocity steels.
