Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator – Manual OTF Utility Knife, Retractable 6061 Aluminum (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray)

The Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray) is an American-made manual OTF utility knife — a retractable utility knife machined from lightweight 6061 aluminum with a satin anodized gray finish and a clean, smooth machined body. You push the blade out by hand and it springs back with a satisfying “click and clack”: a fully manual out-the-front action with no automatic or assisted deployment, which is why the Zero is legal to carry in all 50 US states.

Designed by engineer Michael Sayers and built in Sevierville, East Tennessee, the Zero reimagines the everyday utility knife with a seamless, screwless, tool-free body and a machined lanyard hole. The minimalist Smooth Operator finish gives a clean look and comfortable in-hand feel, and this manual utility knife accepts standard replaceable utility blades from most major manufacturers, so you always have a fresh edge for EDC, work, and jobsite tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you change the blade on the Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray)?
The Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray) has a screwless, tool-free body, so you change a utility knife blade by hand — no screwdriver needed. It accepts standard replaceable SK5 utility blades from most major manufacturers, and swapping in a fresh edge takes seconds.

Are OTF knives legal, and is the Rivery Manufacturing Zero legal to carry?
Yes. The Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray) is a manual OTF knife — the blade is deployed by hand, not by a spring or button — so it is legal to carry in all 50 US states. Knife laws that restrict OTF knives target automatic (switchblade) OTFs; because the Zero is fully manual it falls outside them. Always confirm your local ordinances.

What states are OTF knives illegal in?
Restrictions vary by state and generally apply to automatic (switchblade) OTF knives rather than manual ones. Because the Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray) is a fully manual OTF utility knife with no automatic deployment, it is legal to carry in all 50 US states — but always check your local ordinances.

How does an OTF knife work, and how does the Rivery Manufacturing Zero deploy?
The Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray) uses a manual key-and-spring out-the-front slide: push the slide forward to extend the blade for cutting, and it retracts automatically when you release it — the “click and clack” action. There is no automatic or assisted deployment.

What is an OTF knife?
OTF stands for “out the front” — the blade deploys straight out of the front of the handle instead of pivoting on a hinge. The Rivery Manufacturing Zero Smooth Operator (Zero-M-OTF-S-6061-Gray) is a manual OTF utility knife: you slide the blade out by hand and it auto-retracts, pairing OTF deployment with a standard replaceable utility blade.
