About Robertson Equal Plate

Robertson Equal Plate

*** Please Note!  This is an add-on or requires order of more than one plate!  This is not a complete slider by itself. ***

The Bruce Charles Designs Robertson Equal Plate add-on introduces another addition to our unique Robertson line of magnetic fidget sliders, and is available in Stainless Steel, Brass, and Copper.

This add-on plate is meant to work with the original Robertson Sliders, either Brass, Copper, or Stainless Steel, which are made as mirror pairs, with the magnets set closer to the surface on one side than the other.  The close side is marked with a tiny “+” in one corner and when those sides are facing each other the magnetic force is stronger.  With the “+” sides facing away from each other, the force is lighter.  This provides two different strength sliders in one, and is the key to the Robertson’s variety and flexibility.

So Why The Equal Plate?

We learned with The Micro Stackable Magnetic Slider that stacking more than two sliders together can add a dimension all its own, so we finally made some Robertson plates in which the magnets are set equidistant from the sliding surface… and the Equal Plate was born.

So what does this mean?

It means it plays perfectly with every Robertson we’ve ever made, regardless of material.  You can sandwich a Robertson around the equal plate and turn it into a 3-piece slider that is still balanced.  If you make the sandwich with the “+” sides facing in, it’s still strong and with them facing out it’s lighter.  It… well, it just works!

To distinguish between the normal matched pair, the equal plate (would you believe?) is marked with a tiny “=” symbol on one side.

Lastly, we have had a few requests from people who have wanted to stack more than 3 Robertsons.  For that purpose we recommend just buying as many Equal Plates as you would like.  They will all stack, they’ll all play well together, and you can be the envy of your friends.  We require video of the 5-stacks or it didn’t happen!

Superior Craftsmanship

The one piece body is CNC machined from a single piece of stainless, brass, or copper. The magnet bores are held to very tight tolerances to provide a secure press fit without any adhesives. The final magnet depth is set to to be precisely centered between the sliding faces using purpose-built jigs and fixtures.

Sliding surfaces intentionally have toolmarks which, after break-in, will provide a wonderfully smooth sliding surface.

Excellence by Design - Background on the Original Robertson

The original brass Robertson is the result of a long design and redesign process that ran into a dead end. I was about to give up altogether. But before I abandoned the machining setup, I decided to try something totally different: A fidget slider with exposed magnets on both sides for symmetrical functionality. As soon as I tried the first one I knew I had stumbled onto something unique and enjoyable.

First, it was smooth. I mean SMOOTH. In fact, you could make it bold and throw in an extra “O” and that still doesn’t capture how smooth it was. So little brass is touching during sliding and rotation that it feels like a precision bearing.

Second, it was light and slim. At 11mm, it’s less than ⅔ the thickness of the Lowrey. If you prefer older measurement systems, it’s less than half an inch thick. I’m not sure how many barleycorns that is. See why metric is awesome?

Third, the exposed magnets on both sides enables two things:

  • The magnet depths are set differently on the two sides so there is a strong side and a weak side. You can change between strong and weak just by moving one slider to the back or front and using the other side magnets. On the strong side, marked with a "+", the magnets are set to .8mm from the surface, while they are 1.2mm from the surface on the opposite side.
  • The Robertson can do flips if you hold it JUST right.

Fourth, it is unique in its skeletonized design. This creates a slider that is visually engaging, and as a nice side effect, it also means it is very light! It’s actually lighter than our Aluminum & Brass Lowrey! But the mass is out near the edges, as are the magnets, so the inertia is there for laddering moves.

A Gift to be Cherished
