The Giant Hornbill brings together two distinct sources of inspiration: the powerful presence of the Giant Hornbill and the Japanese-inspired design language that has long defined North Mountain Blade.
The blade features a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese geometry—bold, angular, and highly functional, while retaining the clean lines and controlled proportions associated with Japanese blade design.
Its complex multi-section compound grind is individually hand-finished, creating multiple intersecting surfaces across the blade. This is one of the most demanding and costly elements of the Giant Hornbill to produce, requiring considerably more grinding and finishing work than a conventional blade.
At the heart of the design is an M390 blade hardened to 60–62 HRC, measuring 3.5 inches long and a substantial 4mm thick.
The knife takes its name and visual inspiration from the Giant Hornbill. The bird’s striking eyes and massive, powerful beak influenced several details throughout the design—most noticeably the oversized 9.9mm thumb stud. Large, bold, and intentionally overbuilt, it gives the knife a distinctive character that immediately separates it from conventional folders.
The handle is precision-machined from titanium and fitted with ceramic carbon fiber inlays. We also pushed the clean Japanese-inspired aesthetic further by eliminating visible hardware wherever possible.
The titanium pocket clip uses concealed screws, the rear titanium plate is integrated into the construction, and even the lanyard hole is hidden. Viewed from the presentation side, there are no visible screws at all—everything that could be concealed has been deliberately hidden.
At approximately 8 inches overall, with a 3.5-inch blade, 4mm blade thickness, and 166g weight, the Giant Hornbill has a deliberately substantial and powerful feel.
